HOUSE COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE ENGAGES ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NAVCDP PROJECT

The County Assembly Committee on Agriculture chaired by East Ugenya MCA, Hon. Fredrick Omoro, together with the team from the Department of Agriculture led by the CECM Sylvester K’Okoth, has wound up a two days’ consultative forum meant to sensitize and give updates on the implementation framework on the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP).

The National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project is a Community Driven Project jointly funded by the World Bank, National and County Governments and is being implemented across 33 Counties. The project seeks to support small scale farmers to transit from subsistence to market driven commercial agriculture, enhance market participation and value addition in the select value chain.

Siaya County has identified poultry, tomato, apiculture, cotton and rice as its priority value chain that is to be implemented in the 30 wards.

In his remarks, House Speaker George Okode called on the department to endeavor to meet all the donor demands and indicators necessary for funding as they implement the project. He emphasized on the need to involve Members of the County Assembly on the project implementation in a bid to allow communities identify their problems, suggest suitable solutions and develop action plans necessary for the commercialization of agriculture in the county.

In his remarks, agriculture CECM, Sylvester K’Okoth, underscored the importance of team work between the two arms of the County government of Siaya in order to achieve the objectives of the NAVCDP project geared towards ensuring food security. He further reiterated the department’s commitment in changing the county’s economy using agriculture by making high value crops a capital investment.
