“Siaya county boasts of being home of several living and deceased heroes and heroines who have made tremendous contributions to both the county and the nation such as Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Chief Odera Akang’o, Chief Amoth K’owira, Jakoyo Midiwo, Achieng’ Oneko, Musa Juma, James Orengo, Raila Odinga, Conjestina Achieng’, Prof. Bethwel Ogot, Grace Ogot among others; the naming of these landmarks is one of the many ways through which we can honor our heroes and heroines in order to bestow dignity and appreciate them as a county,” noted Hon. Oinga.

Members of the County Assembly extolled the Motion with Hon. Ben Adalla, MCA North Ugenya Ward, stating that the simple act of recognition and appreciation of the efforts of the county’s heroes and heroines is a way of preserving of history.

Hon. Rose Rabinya supported the Motion saying, “The history of Siaya County is incomplete without the mention of great people like Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, but despite his stature, as a county we have not fully shown our gratitude to him. We should even immortalize him with a massive statue in one of our major towns.”

West Yimbo Ward MCA, Hon. Simion Angule observed that the county has a responsibility of honoring its heroic sons and daughters for their contribution towards community development.

He further added that, “Prof. Bethwel Ogot is a son of this soil who has immensely contributed to the body of knowledge through great publications and as a county we should hold such a man with pride and acknowledge his unwavering efforts.”
